AS/NZS 3001.2

As you may be aware, AS/NZS 3001.2 is currently scheduled to come into effect in November 2023. This is the relevant Standard for “Connectable Electrical Installations” which covers Installations in vehicles and relocatable units and applies to the RV Industry. The Caravan Industry Association of Australia has released a “Guidance Document” to assist installers & manufacturers to interpret & comply with the standard. If you haven’t already, we recommend you obtain a copy for your reference.

Part of this standard stipulates the standards & requirements for Lithium batteries when used in caravans, motorhomes and other habitable areas.  Originally, AS/NZS 3001.2 was interpreted as requiring Lithium batteries to meet AS/IEC 62619 as a complete battery assembly. However, the new guidance document now states that the standard may be applied at either a cell or complete battery level.

Referencing AS/NZS 3001.2 clause 5.4.13.1

“Each lithium-ion battery shall be provided with a battery management safety system either integrated into a battery pack or as a separate component. All lithium-ion batteries shall comply with AS IEC 62619. The requirement for compliance with AS IEC 62619 may be applied to either the battery as a whole or the individual cells within the battery. It is recommended that the entire battery and its management system, as a combination, comply with the standard. However, as a minimum, each cell of the battery must comply.”

How does this relate to Provolt Lithium Batteries?

Provolt batteries have always used certified cells that comply with the requirements of AS/IEC 62619, and therefore our batteries would currently comply with the requirements of AS/NZS 3001.2. However, by 1st November 2023, all our Compact range of batteries will comply with the requirements of AS IEC 62619 as a complete battery unit.  This ensures that when your customers purchase a Provolt battery, they are receiving a product that offers the highest levels of safety & performance… and you can supply & install the battery with confidence.
